Hell's Gate by Benjamin Daniels

Benjamin Daniels

Hell’s Gate

The gates of Hell are open. Angels and Demons fight for our mortality and dominance of earth. The rapture diminishes the human population and very few remain to defend what God gave us. It is up to the Angels to fight the war, the humans to survive and the druids to protect the earth.

Cole wants nothing more than to be left alone until the war is over and see who wins. He doesn't care for rules of any kind and wants least of all to choose a side. Fate however, has different plans for him. His only friend is being held hostage by a Demon with a plan to win the war and return the earth to what it once was. It is up to him to rescue her with the help of a fallen Angel who comes to his aid to ensure his survival.

The Druids are the only ones who can save his friend but they have an agenda of their own. The demon is demented but has the best intentions with what she believes. Cole finds himself lusting after the fallen Angel and must choose between her and saving his friend. The problem is that he doesn't know who he can trust.

Armageddon is here and Hell on earth has just begun.

Excerpt Hell’s Gate:

"Well now, children. Who decided to play and did not invite me to join?” Her voice is feminine, seductive and teasing with sexuality. I can’t see her yet, but the tone is that of a very beautiful woman. Vera's voice holds the same electric currents in it, but I’m not attracted to this one.

Vera's voice sounds strained, as if she’d been talking for hours. Like she is just waking in the morning and isn't functioning quite right. "Thank you for answering my call, Lilith."

"I'm not answering your call Vera, you assume too much. You sent out a beacon for aid, that much you did, but you see you're on my lands and a beacon must be answered by the enforcers. I just can’t allow it to happen." Her voice isn't as pleasant. "You have all broken Demonic law. I was not informed any of you would be here. It is within my rights to kill you."

She’s beautiful.  Her hair is fire truck red, it curls naturally down her back and follows her soft jaw. Her eyes’ are fierce with the color of a deep emerald. She has skin as pale as the full moon in the middle of the night. A short dress barely covers what she has to show. The dress hangs low on her breasts with circles cut out of the midriff leaving a single strip running across her stomach into a pair of panty bottoms with a loin cloth that is higher in the front than the back. Black boots run up her legs with the dress hiding the top of the boots. Her wings are reddish brown and look like leather. They don’t compare to those of an angel but are more like those of a bat. The stories at least get some things right.

She leans closer to whisper softly in Vera's ear. “Now what should I do.” She curls her mouth into a scary smile. Whatever she is planning, she’s going to enjoy it.

Benjamin Daniels

Benjamin Daniels was born and raised in West Jefferson, Ohio. Graduated from West Jefferson High School and went on to get two college degrees. He still lives within the sleepy town of West Jefferson taking care of his family and small dog. He often looks for good charities to donate to and causes to follow. He abandoned one field of study when writing became his passion and is happy about the decision to take on the written word.

Ambrosia: So your life has been pretty intense compared to most. Most movies can’t even hold up to what you’ve lived. This must have some impact on your writing, would you agree?

Ben: Absolutely, the memories I have come through in my writing. There are elements of my writing that reflect about the characters that only a few know and why they are the way they are. However it did make them unique and the characters they have become. I use a lot of myself within it and a lot of my own life story but figuring out which is the fun part. *wink*

Ambrosia: It certainly adds to the intrigue. Your voice in your writing is very unique. How would you describe to a new reader your specific writing style?

Ben: Detailed… ;) Honestly no, my voice is unique because I live in my head 95% of the time. Most writers will tell you they do too but I'll tell you because I'm in a chair, I haven't seen sunlight in three months. I pretty much stay in one room because that is where my toys are and I have no reason to go flop out on the sofa and my friends left me a long time ago. To say that I don't live in my head is an understatement. Oh I do have to add that most won't think about, since I am in a chair, I can't feel 75% of my body, everything thought, feeling, sensual pleasure described down to the last detail. I have to go back through time to remember what it is like. You forget over time.

I don't know how to put it any other way. You really don't think about it, you don't remember it. You always feel your legs. You know what it is like to be covered in mud. I no longer have those feelings. I no longer feel them. I don't know what it is like to have my toes in the sand on the surf torn shore to have them wash over them anymore and feel the sand slightly pull it from under your feet tickling them as the sea robs the land of its mass but it is a memory to have and for just one more time, I would sell my soul to have again.

Ambrosia: That's truly what makes your work all the more incredible in my eyes. Though I do have more questions for you, in regards to your recent statement I want to step aside and bring up something else. All of your royalties are donated to charity. Tell us about the charities you’ve chosen and what makes them stand out for you. Moreover, the ones you choose when you change where the royalties give to, such as you did for the recent tragic school shooting to help those families.

Ben: I wrote my Erotica for the ladies it naturally had to go to a cause for them. I have had friends die of breast cancer. I have watched them die in their lovers arms and to be helpless as they pass with as much dignity as they can. It's amazing what you can remember when you have to look into the eyes of a dying person and not even please don't go will ever bring them back. To be part of the solution even if it is only ever 20 bucks over my whole book's life. At least I was a part of it. Hell's Gate is being donated to a cure for paralysis for obvious reasons. It has its ups and it's down, and when someone isn’t truly in need right now that I can help it will return to them. The search for a cure isn't going anywhere and it is a long uphill battle that I will never see in my life time. To help out a family who just lost their child. I can help today.

Ambrosia: Well we certainly know where the inspiration for the story comes from, but what compelled you to write the Seventh Seal Saga?

Ben: I've always been drawn to writing. I love to do it but compelled isn't the word I would use. What inspired me rather to write and actually complete a book is because there was a woman in my life when I began the books who meant the world to me. She was God's present to me and my own personal fallen Angel and nothing will ever rob her of that title. I will always owe her for giving me the strength, courage and dedication to complete the first book and the universe built upon it. Every time I close my eyes I see her face and smile a little as I write knowing that it will eventually all come together.

Ambrosia: What has been the hardest part regarding your writing?

Ben: Remembering.

Ambrosia: And is there anything that this journey in writing has taught you? Or anything you have learned from it all?

Ben: Nothing happens overnight, nothing happens easily and nothing happens without having a price to pay. We all pay the Fiery man in the end and it has taught me a lot but nothing I can't roll away from with a smile on my face just because I did do it, I did complete it and I didn't take no for an answer.

Ambrosia: In all of your books, do you have a favorite character or quote?

Ben: Can I say all of them?  *laugh* They are after all different pieces of myself. They would disagree with me and I won't fight with them but damn they like to have fun. I don't know if I have a favorite quote but I'm naturally drawn to Cole since I spend the most time with him.

Ambrosia: To other writers, published or aspiring, is there anything you would like to say?

Ben: Write, and keep writing. Don't worry about it, you'll have all the time in the world to make your edits, but if you don't finish your book it matters little. Just write and keep at it until you finish it. You can think it is shit later and nitpick about the stupid things after it is complete. Step one first if you don't fall flat on your face, pat yourself on the back, you've made it to step two. *smile*

Ambrosia: And is there anything else you would like to share with us about yourself?

Ben: I'm me, love me or hate me in the end, I'll still be me. If they really wish to know more about me, I'm always open to my readers and have no troubles talking to any of them.

Brian McKinley Author of Ancient Blood

I was so excited to have Brian join us to talk about Ancient Blood, this book was positively incredible and blew me away completely. A bravo and we cant wait for the encore! He's hilarious too by the way... I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

Ambrosia Arts : What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Brian: Deciding which words to use and typing them all in.

Ambrosia Arts : Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Brian : Besides how hard it is to write an entire book? I learned all kinds of architectural and design terms so that I could properly describe Sebastian’s mansion (and most of it wound up getting cut out!) as well as a lot of medieval feast terms. Honestly, I had to do little bits of research for all kinds of aspects of the story because I hate getting details wrong. It’s been several years, so I don’t remember everything, but I learn a lot for every book I write.

Ambrosia Arts: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Brian : Read as much as you can and keep working. Your writing will only get better with practice.

Ambrosia Arts : Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Brian : Hello, are you out there? If you read my book, then please review it!

Ambrosia Arts : What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?

Brian : ANCIENT BLOOD was probably the most personal book I’ve ever written, and the character of Avery featured a lot of self-examination. I really had to be careful to keep Avery a character rather than me, but still pour my emotions and feelings into him. That sense of a person baring their soul had to come through in the book for it to work. The reader had to engage with Avery at the deepest level and really take the journey with him, so I had to be very emotionally honest with the character when I was writing him. I had to pull out those dirty, secret feelings that I and friends I’ve known have had and hope that such raw honesty would draw readers in rather than repel them.

Ambrosia Arts : Do you ever experience writer's block?

Brian : All the time! One of the most difficult things for me is make myself start writing. Once I get going, I can often develop a rhythm, but sometimes every sentence is a struggle. On my second book, I had periods of up to two years where I didn’t write a thing. I hope to never experience such a long period again.

Ambrosia Arts : Do you write an outline before every book you write?

Brian : Yes. For me, an outline is a necessity. I need some kind of roadmap to follow and I need to convince myself that there’s a solid enough story to proceed. I feel free to deviate from or change my outline as I go, but I don’t trust raw ideas. It’s too easy to start with something that sounds like a great idea, get several chapters in, and suddenly realize that you’ve got no idea where the story is going and you’ve lost inspiration. You can’t count on inspiration. For me, writing is such a lengthy and difficult process that I need to be confident in that final destination before I can start.
Ambrosia Arts : Have you ever hated something you wrote?

Brian : Not really. There have been times when I’ve looked back at lines or scenes and decided that they could be better, but if I’m critical of something as I write it, I’ll go back and change it. I’m a perfectionist, so usually everything I write is as good as I can make it at the time. I’m always willing to improve, but I have to believe that what I’m doing is great at the time or I’ll lock myself into immobility.

Ambrosia Arts : What is your favorite theme/genre to write about?

Brian : I’d probably call it “Extraordinary people in ordinary situations.” Kind of a reverse of the usual horror set up, but it really covers my favorite stuff. I like the fun of examining what everyday life is like for extraordinary creatures and people dealing with the mundane world.

Ambrosia Arts : What was the first piece you ever wrote?

Brian : It’s so far back, I can’t even remember. I used to write science fiction stories for my grandparents when I was five or six years old and continued to write little epics all through my school years.

Ambrosia Arts : How much do you feel you've improved in the last few years?

Brian : I think the last year or two have seen a huge improvement in my writing style and my instinct for storytelling. I’ve lost a lot of the pretension and showy literary style that I used to use to dress up my work and have really begun to write strong, clear sentences. I owe a lot of that to a local critique group I joined. My work before and after working with them is noticeably different.

Ambrosia Arts : Where do you get most of your ideas?

Brian aka Brain : From my brain. Seriously, I draw ideas from all over. I take elements of things that happened to me or other people I know, stories from history, people from history, and mix them with characters that have been living in my head for years. A lot of times I get ideas by watching movies, TV shows, or reading other books and thinking about the roads they didn’t take with their story. Some of my best ideas have come from my frustration at never seeing or reading something, therefore I decide that I’m going to do it!

Ambrosia Arts : What is your favorite place for thinking?

Brian : Thinking for me tends to happen everywhere. Driving, sitting around, or wherever. I’m in my head 90% of the time, so I’m almost always thinking about some aspect of my stories.

Ambrosia Arts : Who was your favorite childhood author?

Brian : Dr. Suess.

Ancient Blood:

A Novel of the Hegemony

By  Brian Patrick McKinley

Avery Doyle loves vampires; he’s read every novel, seen all the movies, and researched the folklore.  When his first one-night-stand, Caroline, turns out to be a true vampire on the run, he jumps at the chance to leave his ordinary life and join her as a “child of the night.”  The honeymoon ends, however, when Caroline’s brutal Creator Sebastian enslaves them on his island estate and Avery must confront the dehumanizing reality behind his dreams.

In order to survive, Caroline and Avery take their place as servants in Sebastian’s household during a gathering of the most powerful vampires on Earth, the Hegemony, and soon find themselves involved in the myriad intrigues and deceptions that form the night-to-night existence of The Order.

A society of wealth, power, and inhuman decadence whose existence is protected by human complicity and disbelief, The Order is the immortal aristocracy hidden behind the giant corporations and political leaders of the world. Sebastian, however, has a plan that will change The Order forever and shatter human civilization.

To avoid this terrible fate, Avery and Caroline will not only have to defy the most powerful creatures on Earth, but also confront the darkest aspects of themselves. For in the world of the Hegemony, even victory may cost them their souls . . .

A fast-paced thriller that both re-imagines and pays tribute to the traditional vampire, Ancient Blood is a story of love, ambition, sacrifice, and betrayal that is frighteningly human.

About the Author

Brian is a lifelong vampire fan from New Jersey and has written four screenplays, a stage play which won a state-wide contest and was produced by a NJ community theater, and numerous short stories which have been published online in various magazines.

Excerpt:

She gave me the earring and, as delicately as I could, I pierced one of the smaller arteries at the bottom of her neck. I handed the earring back to her and bent to drink. While I did, she punctured my neck in the same way and put her lips to the wound. This is probably the one major advantage a starving Vampyr has over a starving human, this mutual-cannibalism we can perform. I guess it’s a little like having sex while freezing just to generate bodily warmth, but among Vampyrs, this is considered the purest form of lovemaking. It didn’t have the climactic intensity of sex, but it was a warmer plateau, like riding that pre-orgasmic moment forever. Or, for those of a more gastronomic bent, imagine eating the best chocolate sundae you ever had and never reaching the bottom of the dish and never losing your appetite for it. It made me feel close to her in a way that was impossible with any other form of verbal or physical expression. At that moment, we were literally one being, one system circulating its life between our separate halves.

We fed and kissed and comforted each other for the rest of the night. When sunrise came, we fell into our daytime hibernation coma holding each other.

The Orb of Truth Interview with Brae Wyckoff

“It’s a cross between Lord of the Rings and the Wizard of OZ where you will be swept away into a magical land of Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings.”

—Brae Wyckoff

Voted #1 Best FAntasy Book Under the Radar!
Voted #1 Best Christian Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book!
Voted #1 Best Indie Fantasy Book!

The Orb of Truth Book Synopsis:

In the hundreds of years since the Holy City disappeared, darkness has fallen over the land. Human kingdoms have seized control of the realm, scattering the other races into hiding.

Bridazak, a skilled thief, and his friends, a Dwarf and a fellow Ordakian, have dared to remain within the human communities and live relatively quiet lives, until they discover a mysterious, magical artifact. The three friends are thrust into an adventure that will challenge their faith, their purpose, and their destiny as they chase a forgotten and lost prophecy across the realm of Ruauck-El, where they hope to discover the origins of the strange item and their place in its history.

An ancient, unknown enemy threatens the completion of their journey at every turn. Bridazak is about to face the biggest adventure of his life, one that may change the known realm, and answer the questions he has carried all his life. Will they unlock the truth?

About the Author:

Brae Wyckoff was born and raised in San Diego, CA and is working toward a Psychology degree. He has been married to his beautiful wife, Jill, for 20 years, and they have three children; Tommy, Michelle, and Brittany. He has a beautiful grandson named Avery. Brae has been an avid gamer since 1985. His passion for mysterious realms and the supernatural inspired him to write The Orb of Truth, the first in a series of fantasy action adventures. Brae describes The Orb of Truth as a cross between the Lord of the Rings and the Wizard of OZ where you will be swept away into a magical land of Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings.

Ambrosia Arts: So when was the first moment you realized that writing was going to be a career?

Brae Wyckoff : It was always the dream to be an author in my life but it just never seemed possible.

It was two years ago that I lost my job suddenly and I decided to make that leap of faith and go full-time into writing and getting my book published.

I believe it is my destiny and me losing my job was not a bad thing.

Ambrosia Arts : How did this story come to you?

Brae Wyckoff: I have been working on The Orb of Truth for over twenty years but the pieces never seem to fit and I was only getting half way through it and then shelving the book in frustration.

The story was there from my days of gaming Dungeons and Dragons but the overall theme came to me after I lost my job. I asked myself, "What is your purpose in life? Do I matter?" These questions are what prompted the fulfillment of The Orb of Truth by taking the characters through it. I would say the story was divinely orchestrated.

Ambrosia Arts: Aside from this series do you have any other projects in the works now?

Brae Wyckoff : In regards to writing projects, I have one in the hopper that correlates to a couple characters from the book series. They are becoming fan favorites with their humorous banter...it is Lester and Ross! They are magically animated thieves tools that are brothers...a kind of Laurel and Hardy mix.

My intention is to write a back story on how they were created and give it away for FREE on Amazon. I have the story outlined and I will start writing it soon.

My hand is in so many things outside of writing. I host my own blog talk radio show called Broadcast Muse where I interview amazing people around the world such as authors, celebrities, and Christian leaders.

My wife and I also have a website where we report on the miracles happening around the world. It is called The Greater News. (www.thegreaternews.com) and we also have a Facebook page. We reach thousands of people and have had millions of page views.

Besides this I also started my own publishing company called LR Publishing. The reason I did this was that it is near impossible to get a publisher these days. I'm a self-starter and I make things happen.

Ambrosia Arts: That's great. You sound like a very busy man. What inspires you to write day to day?

Brae Wyckoff: It is something that burns inside. The story wants to be free and if I don't write it then I lose sleep. In essence, the world that I have created becomes a part of me and sometimes can be difficult to separate reality from fiction.

I'm inspired by so many things beyond just what burns inside of me. I'm inspired by life itself, by creation, by The Bible and God's Word, by friends and family, by others victories in life when they are beat up but they don't give up, and also hearing the great reviews coming in from readers.

Ambrosia Arts: What has been your biggest trial in publishing outside of writing?

Brae Wyckoff : This is my take on the publishing world. The big houses are not taking anyone unless you are somebody of importance because there is too much risk for them. Agents are not taking new clients as there is too much risk for them also.

Now for those who do get an agent and a publishing house then you need to market yourself as they do limited marketing for you. How does this make any sense? They want the author to do all the work and they reap the benefit of sales.

Indie Authors are taking control of their destiny by self-publishing now that there are options available. You need to market yourself and you get all the profit without forking it over to the agent and publisher.

The biggest concern for any author should be professionalism. Your book needs to be professionally edited and your book cover needs to be designed by someone who knows what they are doing. Many authors are skimping in these areas and it will affect their sales tremendously and result in negative reviews on Amazon.

We need to put our best out there for readers!

I want to thank you Jacquelynn for the wonderful interview.

I also want to thank all of my fans who have joined the adventure and are embracing the characters. You will NOT be disappointed with the sequel, The Dragon God, coming out later this year. I'm really excited to get it released and my editor and I are working hard to make it the best reading experience for you.

Blessings everyone!

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK:
There was an alley to the right. Too small for the car, or could he follow? Would it be a dead end and he’d have me cornered? It was my only chance. I lunged for its opening. My knee gave as my foot twisted off the curb sending me stumbling forward. My arms thrust out instinctively. I landed snapping my wrist back. They hadn’t softened the blow to my face as I hit the cold wet concrete. Blood spattered from my nose and mouth. My lungs were too fatigued to even muster a scream. Instead this sickened pathetic whimper gurgled out through the stream of blood. As I lay there, trying to muster enough will to get up, the tires squealed to a stop right next to me. My ears rang in a high-pitched echo combined with the sound of my blood rushing in my ears. “Anna!” My whole body shook violently when I heard a rough baritone voice scream my name in an intense rage. There was no way I could run from him anymore. Would I die here? Would he take me somewhere else to prolong my suffering? How long would it take? Another dark thought. Is this what Neesa and her mother had seen? Futilely my eyes closed. If I had to be conscious, I refused to watch my own death. “Anna! Look at me!” One hand held onto my shoulder turning me slowly as another hand carefully took a hold of my chin, tilting it up and making me cough on my own blood. “No.” Worthlessly defiant. I gurgled coughing on the blood filling my mouth relentlessly. “Alright. Just hang on. I’m going to move you, okay,” his voice filled with laughter. Though weak and painful, it flooded with the sound of relief. “No!” The scream was weak and sprayed blood as I spoke. My hand shot up defensively swiping at his face to try to push him away from me. The hand at my chin released to take my wrist gently.
